This is reflected in the arts sector economy of scale more specifically in pay rates terms and the vast number of jobs and skills people who are independently working the industry need to encompass to survive. The standard of performance is good and the talent is certainly here however as a nation we are still struggling to view arts performance as a valid career option in itself. The local theatrical scene has moved from strength to strength as we are now reaping the benefits of performing arts schools’ students and more funding opportunities for new work, education and export of work. What do you make of the local theatrical scene? What would you change about it? Good quality scripts will hopefully be the common denominator for the company’s choice of repertoire. The piece doesn’t necessarily set the tone of future work in terms of content however the ensemble-focused and collaborative nature is indicative of how we like to work as a team. We like the narrative style and strong emphasis on story-telling, as well as the creative ensemble work in the piece. The Stage characterised it as a “highly atmospheric piece of gothic story-telling, channelling Edgar Allan Poe and Henry James, producing a compelling and macabre account of obsession, immurement and murder.Thomas Camilleri takes on the titular role in Ernest and the Pale Moon The Telegraph described Ernest and the Pale Moon as “gloriously gothic”. ![]() The show previously toured in 2010, directed by Emma Earle and was nominated for a Total Theatre award. Upon seeing her with another man he is thrown into a jealous rage and driven to murder, though all is not what it may at first seem and slowly Ernest’s guilt sends him on a spiralling descent into madness.Įrnest and the Pale Moon is written by Oliver Lansley, directed by James Seager and designed by Zoe Squire. “The language oozes gruesome appeal and the mood is dark and unsettling, underpinned by passages of haunting live music.” The ScotsmanĮrnest Hemel spends his days watching the beautiful young woman, Gwendoline who lives in the apartment opposite. The piece contains narrative twists and turns, live music, inventive design and physical storytelling to provide a thrilling and terrifying experience. Last year, Les Enfants Terribles production The Trench took The Old Market by storm, sweeping up fantastic reviews before embarking on a national tour.Įrnest and the Pale Moon is inspired by the works of Edgar Allan Poe and Alfred Hitchcock set within a highly visual performance style. Les Enfants Terribles are returning to The Old Market for the Brighton Fringe this year with a re-staging of their acclaimed Ernest and the Pale Moon in partnership with Bristol based company Pins and Needles Productions.
